Sometimes, being hit in the face is the best therapy

*sigh* I feel better.

My fight team, Capitol Punishment Mixed Martial Arts (doing business as "College Park Mixed Martial Arts": http://cpmma.net/), was hosting a sparring session with a pro kickboxing/MMA fighter this morning. The same pro fighter was having one of his students train for her first amateur MMA bout. With the cow manure, horse shit, and sewage affecting me two weeks in a row, I needed to hit something (or someone). So, yeah, SPARRING TIME!

Naturally, I was to spar the pro fighter. I don't remember his record. He was training for his next fight. As you could expect, I was excited about it. It also helps to play some Wu-Tang Clan and Lord Have Mercy to get hyped! *both thumbs up* Then we start the sparring session...

:-/

I'll get straight to the point: I got my ass kicked. But, aside from some technical issues with my fight game, I beat myself because of inconsistent training and bad cardio. The end result may have been the same, but it's not a good look when the cardio is sub-par and you can't move as fast. Even with my legs being kicked (and I can verify this because I fought in an exhibition match almost 2 years ago), it was not affecting my movement. My cardio is affecting my movement. I get hit a lot while sparring. I'm one of those people that adhere to the notion of being able to take hits while landing your own. With that said, cardio determines whether you can maintain some control or if you get ragdolled. I think I was in somewhere in the middle today.

My boxing still needs work. I'm not delusional about my hand skills. But what I need to do is throw two- or three-punch combos (and end with a kick...or two, in kickboxing sessions). What's also more interesting is as the pro fighter was giving me tips, he said that I could read his movements well. *nods* Hmm...not bad.

Yeah, getting hit in the face (and legs and right arm and right obliques) was the best therapy for me today. Almost makes me wanna try my hand at fighting again....

Crisis Contained

Oh my...

This week needs to end. Like, I'm glad it's Friday and I cannot wait for Friday to end. I'm almost savoring it like the Checkers burger/wings/fries I just ate. ^_^

For 8 days, this particular youth made his life difficult for everyone involved. I have to figure out the next steps for this fool as he alienated almost everyone in his family with his misbehavior. But, he ain't dead. And I'm not traveling up to Baltimore to answer any questions.

I originally thought "Crisis Averted"...I think "Crisis Contained" fits the situation better.

Even with the crisis contained, there's so much that needs to be done and I haven't had the time or energy to complete the other essential paperwork. And it's been this way since last week. Worst of all, this month is almost over. Talk about overwhelming. So, effective today, I'm excusing myself from purely social events. Unfortunately, it's like that.

One of these days, I will write a blog not talking about my work. It's coming. Let me just get through this craziness...

Maladjusted humans

I’m seriously about to lose my mind.

Yeah, hi. I’m back. Back from not posting anything for a year and some change. And there’s a lot to update. The bullet points:

  • Barack Hussein Obama is the first (and currently, the only) Black president to win the presidency TWICE;
  •  There was a woman I was dating around the last time I wrote anything. She and I broke up. I take the blame for it;
  • I’m still training in the martial arts; however…
  • I’m constantly inundated with work. Work would have me rip out my hair if I had any to rip out…
Actually, I’m gonna go into that above bullet point for a bit. I’m frustrated enough where I have to write about it. I don’t have the capacity to think of some witty lines for it. Maybe later, but not now. Yeah, and I’m gonna post my thoughts on this online forum. I fell off from that as life became more complicated. There’s also this unsavory occurrence where I posted my thoughts online—much like I’m doing here and now—and it was on a very sensitive topic that I should have discussed with my girlfriend at the time. Several times in my head, my better judgment told me not to post it and talk it out with her. I went against that better judgment. Naturally, she broke up with me (there’s a lot of that going in my life—but that’s later). I know I’m forgiven, but that’s one hell of a thorn in my side. So, I have to be careful about what I post because my work deals with a very sensitive population.

With that said, there’s worse things posted and exposed online. The FBI just shut down a Web site about mermaids. I don’t think my written thoughts are going to destroy the fabric or trust of the public.  I post enough on Facebook and Twitter, and if the government/employer had a real problem with it, they know where to find me.

When you got an AWOL kid and you’re thinking, “It’s not a matter of if, but when he gets seriously hurt or killed”, it makes the shit real. I, for one, can barely believe that I have nearly two weeks of disturbingly haywire activity. Half of my troubles come from the kids that are stuck on stupid. The other half comes from the paperwork that comes with said youth stuck on stupid. And everyone above me wants the work done either immediately or 1-2 days later.

This is the problem of working with maladjusted humans. Those working with them have a lot of responsibility on their shoulders. Everyone outside of the grunt work that is juvenile probation is making decisions that never seem to be made with the foot soldiers’ input. And there is the money…yeah…if you’re not making a profit, then you’re being given money and you have to prove your worth in order to continue being given money. It’s proven through numbers and calculations and scientific data. If you can’t prove through either mode that your work is worth being funded, you either lose money or become defunded.

As the entire above paragraph happens, I’m in my office wondering how to juggle everything and practice solid time management concepts when the shitstorms hit hard. I’m demanded to supervise every youth and young adult I’m responsible for without fail when time is never on my side. And for the record, I could have done work from home. In the time I’ve taken to write this post, I could have gotten some work done. Sure. And how would I get compensated for the time taken outside of work to get the work done? Overtime? More comp time? Do I look like I would be willing to work any more than the 8-10 hours already put in?

Yeah…I don’t think so.

And with that, I feel better. I’m out.

Dang...I'm really bad at this.

A lot has happened in the last 3.5 months. Too much for me to go into. I'll give the basics, though:

  • I've been reassigned to two units within a month, one unit working with youth in Western MD, and my current unit working with kids that can't lay off the weed...
  • I'm between 237-240 lbs. and counting down...
  • I got in a car accident in January. In the process, I drove a 2012 Jeep Liberty, a 2011 Mercedes C300, and a 2011 Mitsubishi Endeavor. I can positively say that I've driven two SUVs and a luxury car in my lifetime. :)
  • I had my first kickboxing match. It was an exhibition match, but my opponent was trying to knock me out. But, in the three rounds we fought for, he only knocked me down once and he only knocked me down because he caught me backing up. I also showcased my big-man high kicks. Had this been a real match, I would have lost. However, I got some respect for my heart and my tree-trunk legs reaching my opponent's head. Not to mention that I did not train for this fight. It was completely spontaneous and the promoter needed to fill a slot at the last minute. Just thinking about it makes me smile.
  • I'm somewhat over my granddad's death. In the end..."it doesn't even matter" (just joking, randomly thought of Linkin Park lyrics). For real, I still have his homegoing program in my briefcase. One day, I'll get into that.
  • I jumped ship. I had a BlackBerry. Now, I have a iPhone. I was hoping to switch phone companies, but a phone costing me $.99 and a new two-year commitment is not a bad deal, either...
  • I can't do what I want and I barely have the money to take care of what I need. Then, with that accident in January, I was all sorts of pissed-off. I was convinced that there is no silver lining. If there is one, I'll believe when I see it.
...And I still hold on to that view. It's gradually getting better, but the silver lining...nah, getouttaherewiththatbs.

A month away and a lot to say...

Wow. Since September 20, I haven't posted anything.

Strangely, I remember a lot of what I've wanted to say for the past month. Just haven't had the time to put it down...no, that's not completely true. I didn't feel like putting the energy into crafting my raw feelings into polished sentences and paragraphs for the world to see.

I also couldn't bring myself to write because of those raw feelings. But, I'm in a place where I can do that now.

A lot has went down since I last posted. On September 21, Troy Davis was executed in Georgia after the US Supreme Court did not grant the man another stay. I still believe that those red flags consisting of 7 out of 9 "eyewitnesses" changing or recanting their testimony should have been addressed in the form of a retrial. Throw in some fingerprints data, DNA, some'n. But, that didn't happen and Troy Davis was lynched before midnight of 9/22.

I was determined to write my opinion on it. It wasn't going to be extensive; I just wanted to share my thoughts on it. Link some articles here and there, throw in a timeline of events leading up to the execution from a news agency outside of America that had a better understanding of the workings of America than America apparently did. As you can tell, it never came to pass. Perhaps it was for the best because I'm sure plenty of folks have done so within days after the execution. On 9/22, something else was on my mind and I had never felt so numb upon learning the news.

My grandfather died.

It was as recent as maybe two weeks ago when I actually felt the hurt from that loss. From hearing the news to the funeral to the days after, I ran on auxiliary. I wasn't emotionally connected to anything. The only thing I knew I had to do was be strong. I learned this lesson 6 years ago and it kept reinforcing itself within that period. Prior to that, my godsister's mother also died earlier in that week. The end of September was rough for myself and my fam'. What especially hurt about this was that my grandfather was one of the few men I respected enough that I would want to see me getting married, have children and whatever else happens as I get old and such. I know he'll be watching me from Heaven and that's one of the most comforting things about this...

Eh, this will have to do. But stay tuned. October has been an eventful month, too! :)

Three trillion hair cuts, 300 billion gyros in the hole and $400,000 is not enough money....

Alright. I haven't posted any original thought in weeks. That changes now!

*A word of caution: I'm still a novice in understanding the economy, but I got the basics down...I think...*

Back to our regularly scheduled programming...

Yesterday, I'm on my lunch break and I decide to check out CNN.com. I know there are better news sites that cover our global community as we know it, but I didn't have a lot of time to experiment. As their headline, President Obama is being covered for the $3 trillion in debt cuts he wants all of Congress to agree and stop with their petty bull-shenanigans. (Obama's even threatening to veto any measure that causes any hardship on the "ordinary American" and not letting the wealthy get their brunt of the problem, too. Now, that's been said for years that the wealthy don't contribute enough, but it's now at fever-pitch because of our S&P downgrade and certain people *coughs -- Republicans* want to make sure they sabotage every plan Obama has drafted so he can be an one-term President...goodness gracious...)

http://www.cnn.com/2011/09/19/politics/obama-debt/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

Anyway, I see the sidebar of different news stories that are related. At the top of the sidebar was the article about Greece and what would it mean for us State-side North Americans if they default. Among other articles I've read, I'm highly curious about this one.

I read this article: http://money.cnn.com/2011/09/19/news/international/greek_default/index.htm?hpt=hp_t2 and I'm thinking, "Oh my goodness."

300 BILLION euros is no joke. What's worse is international economists are almost certain Greece will default. I'm just trying to pay my student loans and in total, it's about !@#$%^& <--y'all don't need to know. But, just getting a college education nowadays costs an arm and a leg (and maybe one of your kidneys considering the alcohol consumed in four years in between beer pong, SHOTS, and possible hazing). I can barely imagine what the pressure is over there as Greece nears the end of their cash flow and they struggle to make more cuts that everyone can agree on. The interesting piece of this circumstance is that apparently, the European Union can survive if Greece defaults (as well as Portugal and Ireland), but the most worrisome countries are Italy and Spain. If they go down, the results would be disastrous. Insult to injury, Italy just got downgraded from A+ to A.

Greece is nearing imminent default, Italy was downgraded, and two other countries are inching closer to default. It's bleak on every front! I'm actually surprised I haven't heard reports of suicides (or maybe I'm not looking hard enough)...

Later on in the day, after work, one of my friends posts this article on Facebook: http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2011/09/19/322405/gop-rep-whines-400k/ <--this Representative says that after all the expenses have been taken care of and he's fed his family, he has $400,000 left over. And he complains about having his taxes raised?

WHAT?! C'MON SON!

I wish I had $400,000 to complain about! Don't get it twisted, I'm not doggin' him on his success. I'm not trippin' on how he is a multi-millionaire with his small business. (A bit oxymoronic, don't you think?) What I'm saying is that if Warren Buffet can man up and raise the taxes on the wealthy (and he is listed by Forbes.com as one of the top three wealthiest people IN THE WORLD--http://www.forbes.com/2010/03/10/worlds-richest-people-slim-gates-buffett-billionaires-2010_land.html?boxes=Homepagelighttop), what's his excuse? Maybe Rep. John Fleming should do what everyone making less than $100,000/year is doing--SAVE YOUR FREAKIN' MONEY!

...and I'm done. Peace.

Reconcile

A broken toe from Tae Kwon Do produces a crippled walk
Walking with a cane, clowning with no shame
Personality intact
Although troublesome were some days
Those were fun days
The most fun day was meeting her

We need to reconcile

*Snap*, her mind took a picture of me with my cane at a red light in the center lane
Providence had us meet
She recognized a familiarity in untimely circumstances
Or, am I wrong?
Maybe it was time for circumstances to occur as it were
Even if I tried, I couldn’t forget her

We need to reconcile

I stuck to my rule of no presumptions
But there was no way I could presume a friendship in the making
I roll with the punches, but this one was sneaky
It wasn’t general; it was a genuine interest in meeting me
No physical contortions with the tongue and verbal malfunctions
Uniquely positioned; two attractive, intelligent individuals who happen to love to dance

Providence had us meet, but human frailties had us separate

Our communication is lost
Our connection is gone
This is no light issue
Despite feeling slighted and misused

We need to reconcile

Bury the knife I’m accused of helping to lodge deep in your back
Feed the beef to the dogs if it’s the remedy to get you back

Because who starts a friendship over a broken toe?
I’ll start first…
As I stand as one man in this democratic republic…
I apologize…
I should have fought for our friendship instead of you feeling burdened
I apologize…

I apologize…
